This is the Progress Matrix.
It will help you visualize student progress from yeartoyear.

This is the chart.
The chart shows student movement from one performance level to another.
To help emphasize small changes, performance levels have been broken into smaller subgroups.

You can read the chart from left to right.
Each row represents a group of students, based on their prior score (marked by the labels on the left).
As we move across the row, each number tells us about the current performance levels of these students (marked by the labels at top).

Let's look at this cell.
Looking to the left, we can see that this row is showing us students whose prior performance level was basic (low).
Looking up, we can see that of those students, we are looking at the subset whose current performance level is below basic (high).
All of these students performed worse this year than they did last year.

The chart is color coded to help highlight patterns of progress.
The diagonal line of scores from top left to bottom right represents students whose prior performance and current performance are the same.
To the left of that diagonal, students' scores have declined (current performance is worse than prior performance).
To the right of that diagonal, students' scores have improved (current performance exceeds prior performance).

This table calculates the total change for each row.
